Battersea Power Station Unveils New Summer Artwork From London Design Practice Poor Collective | Battersea Power Station (2024)

Battersea Power Station has collaborated with POoR Collective to unveil ‘Together We Rise’, a new summer artwork inside the iconic Grade II* listed landmark

On display at the riverside neighbourhood until 13th October 2024, the artwork features over 100 flags suspended inside the Power Station’s two turbine halls, taking visitors on a journey through sunrise and sunset with bright colours and bold designs

‘Together We Rise’ will be accompanied by another bespoke public artwork from POoR Collective, which will be unveiled at Battersea Power Station in September as part of this year’s London Design Festival

‘Together We Rise’ is the latest addition to the Central London neighbourhood, which has come alive this summer with The Battersea Games, an Official Team GB Fan Zone and more than 140 shops, restaurants, bars and unique leisure experience for all to enjoy

Battersea Power Station has partnered with POoR Collective to create ‘Together We Rise’, a vibrant new artwork which is on display in the Grade II* listed Power Station’s turbine halls until 13th October 2024.

After watching the sunrise and sunset over the Grade II* listed Power Station, POoR Collective sought to recreate this in the building’s historic turbine halls. ‘Together We Rise’ is a dynamic exploration of the sun’s movement, encouraging visitors to engage with its ever-changing palette and many faces throughout the day. Suspended from the ceiling of the Power Station’s two historic turbine halls, the installation comprises over 100 flags and takes visitors on a mesmerising visual journey featuring bright pop art style colours and bold prints that reflect the energy of summer.

Complementing the spacious and light surrounding of the Art Deco Turbine Hall A, the ‘Sunrise Flags’ captivate visitors’ attention with warm shades of blue, pink and orange. As visitors move into the 1950s Turbine Hall B, they are greeted with the ‘Sunset Flags’, mirroring the colours of the sun as it begins to set with hot pink, orange and yellow. A rotating circular motif features across the flags, symbolising the sun as it rises and sets over Battersea Power Station.

‘Together We Rise’ will be accompanied by another bespoke public artwork from POoR Collective titled ‘Together In Battersea’ during this year’s London Design Festival. The community inspired installation will be unveiled in Turbine Hall A on 20th September 2024 and will be on display until 20th October 2024.

Launched in 2019 by architects Larry Botchway, Shawn Adams, and Ben Spry, and accountant Matt Harvey-Agyemang, POoR Collective seeks to elevate young people and give them access to the design industry. The London-based studio sees the power of the next generation and aims to get emerging voices heard through design, programmes, and engagement.

Louise Errington-Thomas, Marketing Director at Battersea Power Station Development Company, said:

“It has been fantastic to partner with the POoR Collective to unveil Together We Rise as part of our exciting programme of summer activities. The artwork is truly mesmerising and adds a new element to our visitor experience as we strive to make every trip to Battersea Power Station unique.

“Making art and culture more accessible to the local community has always been a key focus at Battersea Power Station and we look forward to working with POoR and the London Design Festival team over the coming months to bring another exciting piece of artwork to the Power Station in September.”

Shawn Adams, POoR Collective Founder, said:

“It’s been amazing to work with Battersea Power Station and unveil Together We Rise inside Turbine Hall A, as three of our founders grew up in South West London and know the Grade II* listed building very well. The artwork now on display serves as a vibrant prequel to Together In Battersea, a co-designed installation that promises to bring even more colour to this iconic London landmark”

“We have hosted several architecture and design workshops in schools located across the Borough of Wandsworth, so we hope all the students we have met and taught will be able to view the artwork on their next visit to the Power Station!”

Ben Evans, London Design Festival Director, said:

“Together We Rise’ exemplifies the transformative power of public art and its ability to engage and inspire communities. As we look ahead to September, we are excited to collaborate on ‘Together In Battersea’, an installation which will further enrich the cultural landscape of this landmark during the London Design Festival, continuing our mission to make art and design accessible to all and spotlight emerging voices in the design industry.”

The unveiling of ‘Together We Rise’ is the latest public artwork to be presented as part of Battersea Power Station’s rich events and cultural programme. In December 2023, Battersea Power Station partnered with Apple and world-renowned artist David Hockney to unveil ‘Bigger Christmas Trees’, which was projected on to the Power Station’s north facade and chimneys. More recently, British contemporary artist Claire Luxton and MTArt Agency’s ‘Field of Dreams’ was on display in Turbine Hall A creating an immersive botanical inspired hanging installation.

Visitors to Battersea Power Station this summer can also enjoy, The Battersea Games, a sports and games themed event which is now in full swing with family friendly activities including a 100m running track, table tennis, a Padel pop-up court and climbing wall to name a few. From 26th July – 11th August 2024, the Official Team GB Battersea Power Station Fanzone will showcase all the live action from the Paris 2024 Olympics on a giant screen in Power Station Park on the banks of the River Thames, followed by an Official ParalympicsGB Fanzone from 28th August – 8th September 2024, complete with an array of Olympic inspired activities.
