Welcome to Sports Shorts Presented by Final Score! #nfldraft2022NFL draft analysts Kiper, McShay, Reid, and Miller selected their top forty players in a mock draft. Here are their first twelve players. 1. Kiper: Aidan Hutchinson, DE, Michigan2. McShay: Ikem Ekwonu, OT, NC State3. Reid: Malik Willis, QB, Liberty4. Miller: Evan Neal, OT, Alabama5. Miller: Travon Walker, DE, Georgia6. Reid: Kayvon Thibodeaux, DE, Oregon7. McShay: Ahmad Gardner, CB, Cincinnati8. Kiper: Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh9. Kiper: Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU10. McShay: Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame11. Reid: Charles Cross, OT, Mississippi State12. Miller: Jermaine Johnson II, DE, Florida StateThe teams who select these players hope they get in the best possible mental and physical condition to bear fruit (make plays) that lasts (leading to championship rings. Only time will tell what impact these men will make on their respective franchises.Jesus selected twelve men for the most important team ever, his "expansion" franchise. It took them time to develop and mature. Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus, which left eleven who were given the Great Commission to expand God's kingdom. There were times when they didn’t get it right. James and John asked Jesus for special seats at his left hand and right hand, and this caused friction within the team. Sometimes Peter’s mouth wrote checks that he couldn’t cover. He denied Jesus three times before the co*ck crowed during Jesus’s time of despair. But the team blossomed during their fourth season. These ordinary men became extraordinary through the power of the Holy Spirit. Peter and James performed miracles and led thousands to Christ, Ten of the eleven died prematurely for their faith. Their groundwork laid the foundation for the universal church of over two billion worldwide.Perhaps we’ve been slow to start bearing fruit, or started well but cooled off. The good news is that there was hope for the Eleven, and there is hope for us. God has important things in store!“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last…” (John 15:16). God chose us. He appointed us. God created us in his image and equipped us with “first-round” spiritual gifts to build up and edify the body of Christ on earth. The Eleven trained for three years to meet the challenges that Jesus gave them before they bore substantial fruit. We can reach our potential as first-rounders by knowing Jesus personally through his Word, prayer, and obedience, loving others as Jesus would love them, and diligently doing the specific work that God gives us. Each person’s opportunities to impact God’s kingdom are unique. Therefore, we need not feel pressure to do what other people are doing. Let’s try to execute according to his will on our daily opportunities. Know Jesus, love others, do God’s work. Do these three things consistently, and you will bear kingdom fruit that lasts.

Welcome to Sports Shorts Presented by Final Score! Encourage Another BrotherLooking back, which NFL teams do you think had the best draft in 2023? One analyst gave the Philadelphia Eagles an A+, although their first-round pick Jalen Carter raised character questions following his arrest for reckless driving in January. Eight teams, including the Falcons, passed on Jalen Carter before Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman selected Carter. He joins former Bulldog teammates Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean and current teammate Nolan Smith, Jr., on the Eagles defense. Davis and Dean will groom Carter.Stetson Bennett raised character questions mark following his arrest for public intoxication in January. He was predicted to go in the seventh round, but the LA Rams selected him in the fourth round. Rams QB Matthew Stafford, the former UGA quarterback who may miss the upcoming season with a spinal contusion, will groom Bennett, the possible Rams starter in 2023.The Rams and Eagles are the teams that are uniquely situated for these two players. You may be the person uniquely suited to groom someone. Will you be there for that person? When we have a brother who makes a misstep, how do we respond? We are to love them and help them; but for the grace of God, it could be us.Reconciliation doesn’t mean that you agree whatsoever with the actions that a person took that hurt you or hurt others. But God calls us to keep loving them. He loves you and me and the person who wronged us Is our response to write off people who made mistakes or to love them? “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).Former NFL head coach Tony Dungy shared how he did not draft exceptionally talented players who had questionable character. A draft mistake could cost the franchise millions of dollars. The players were tagged in the team’s database as DNDC (Do Not Draft – Character). In the Uncommon Life devotion, Be Draftable, he wrote, “An emphasis on short-term results usually creates long-term problems. The character of a few affects the well-being of many. You will never lose emphasizing character over results. Everyone wants success, but if it comes at the expense of integrity and honor, the cost is too high. Choose what truly matters most: to be successful not just in what you do, but in who you are.”Some NFL teams placed DNDC labels on Carter and Bennett, but the Rams and Eagles believed that teammates could provide the support that they need to help them with their character. Psalm 51:5 reveals that each person is “sinful at birth.” We retain “Do Not Draft – Character” stature until we surrender our lives to Christ. Our surrender gets us drafted onto God’s team for eternity. Jesus Christ died for our sins and his resurrection from the dead created the only pathway to shed our DNDC labels. Who should you be forgiving, encouraging and reconciling with that has stumbled? Ask God through prayer to reveal that person to you.

Welcome to Sports Shorts Presented by Final Score! May We All Wear "42" One DayOn the weekend of April 14-16, every major league team honored the legacy of Jackie Robinson by having all players wear the number 42. This Bleacher Report article https://lnkd.in/gzQDXz5F summarizes how different organizations honored Jackie's memory. Ken Griffey, Jr. asked Commissioner Bud Selig asked for permission to wear number 42 on April 15, 2007. From that point forward the Commissioner designated April 15, the date that Jackie made his major league debut in 1947, for all players to honor Robinson by wearing number 42 during a series. The iconic movie “42” depicted the Jackie Robinson story. The late Chadwick Boseman of Blank Panther fame played Jackie’s role, and Harrison Ford played Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers owner who helped Robinson break baseball’s color barrier. I recall three emotional scenes that parallel key teachings in the Word. In one scene, as Jackie enters the batter’s box, Philadelphia Manager Ray Chapman ridiculed and verbally abused Robinson. The racial epithets that Chapman heaped upon Robinson for minutes would make any moral man cringe with horror and disgust. Yet Robinson stood silently and took it, just as he had done so many times. He knew that if he reacted with fisticuffs, all of his good work to promote social justice and equality would go down the drain, ruining the chance for other men of color to play professional baseball for years to come. Those who passed by hurled insults at him…,(Matthew 27:39). He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; (Isaiah 53:7).In the second scene, Robinson collapses in tears in the dugout tunnel at his emotional breaking point. After Robinson shatters his bat against the wall in utter frustration and anguish, Rickey offered support and encouraged Jackie to not let this incident defeat him.Father, if you are willing, take this cupfrom me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him (Matthew 26:42-43).The third scene occurred in Cincinnati. As the Cincinnati fans hurled racial epithets at Robinson, Dodger shortstop Pee Wee Reese walked across the diamond and spoke with Robinson, who was playing first base. Reese, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, knew that his family and friends were watching, and he had two choices. Reese could join the oppression, or he could support his teammate. Reese put his arm around Jackie, which essentially shouted, “This man is my brother!” He demonstrated the love of Christ for everyone to see. Pee Wee Reese said to Robinson, “Maybe one day we will all wear 42. That way they won’t be able to tell us apart.” By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:35).How will you respond when you see racism? May Christ's love compel you.

Welcome to Sports Shorts presented by Final Score! Competing for a Greater Cause - The Sequel Jon Rahm from Spain won the 2023 Masters by four shots, overcoming a four-stroke deficit as play began on the seventh hole of the third round on Sunday morning following trees collapsing in high winds on Friday and a length Saturday rain delay. Rahm shot a final round 69. His win came exactly 40 years after his fellow Spaniard, the late Seve Ballesteros, made par-eagle-birdie-birdie over the first four holes of his final round and won by four shots. Ballesteros also shot a final round 69.Rahm won the 2023 Masters on April 9 or 4/9. Rahm’s caddie wore bib number 49. Seve’s birthday is 4/9. Have you ever seen so many fours!Rahm was bolstered by a strong following on Sunday with numerous patrons shouting, “Do it for Seve!” Jon was greeted enthusiastically by his wife and two young children, his father, and Spain’s former Masters winner Jose Maria Olazabal after the conclusion of the final round. “Rahmbo” expressed how grateful that he could win the Masters for his country on the fortieth anniversary of Seve’s second Masters win. Rahm played for a greater cause on Sunday as the Europeans did in Seve’s memory in the 2012 Ryder Cup. Rahm commented twice in his post-round interview that his win came on Easter Sunday. Perhaps he was inspired by the greatest cause of all, who is Jesus Christ! What is your greater cause? Is it your family? Is it your team? Is it your individual performance? Is it Jesus? Following last week’s remembrance of the Cross and celebration of Jesus’s triumph over death, is the love of Christ now compelling us (2 Cor. 5:14) to go and make disciples (Matthew 28:19)? When Jesus is your greatest cause, he will help you achieve your greater cause, which is to love others and bring glory to God by pouring into others. Rahm was a highly impressionable seventeen-year-old golfer when the European side won the 2012 Ryder Cup, which was nicknamed the Miracle at Medinah. The historic performance by the European side in memory of Seve surely provided inspiration and motivation for Rahm to win his first green jacket.
