Future lawyers! Before they graduated from high school, seniors Shannon Busse from Sandia Prep and Virginia Moore from Santa Fe Prep spent three weeks with Justice C. Shannon Bacon and her staff at the New Mexico Supreme Court. Each took a "deep dive" into a case, listened to an oral argument, spent time with Supreme Court staff discussing different facets of the law, and completed their senior projects at school on the New Mexico Supreme Court. Shannon Busse will be attending DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, and Virginia Moore will be attending Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut this fall. #nmcourts #futurelawyers #Classof2024

The New Mexico Supreme Court was honored to host a ceremony celebrating three remarkable women for the New Mexico Historical Women Marker Program in the Law Library on June 24, 2024. The International Women's Forum- New Mexico's Historic Women Marker Program and the City of Santa Fe honored three women: Dorothy McKibbin, Myra Ellen Jenkins and Doña Teresa de Aguilera y Roche, and cut ribbon for their historic markers along Alameda St. in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The historic markers detail their contributions to New Mexico. Chief Justice David K. Thomson gave opening remarks, noting Pamela B. Minzner, who was the first woman Chief Justice to serve on the New Mexico Supreme Court, and Mary Coon Walters, the first woman to serve on the New Mexico Supreme Court, are also honored with historical markers. After Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber spoke and declared June 24, 2024, as New Mexico Historic Women Program Marker Day in Santa Fe, he introduced Alette Hahn Hansen, a Santa Fe youth advisory board member who said, "I want to change the world." Keynote addresses began with Mary Brennan speaking about her personal friend Dorothy McKibbin, who was known as the “Gatekeeper of Los Alamos,” hired by Robert Oppenheimer as a secretary for the Manhattan Project. Dr. Audra Bellmore, Associate Professor, University of New Mexico; Cultural Properties Review Committee, Secretary; and historian spoke about Myra Ellen Jenkins, who helped develop New Mexico’s modern historic preservation movement and was the first State Historian. Matt Salonz with the Historian Historic Preservation Division at the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs told the audience about Doña Teresa de Aquilera y Roche, the outspoken wife of the Governor who was arrested and successfully fought charges by the Holy Office of the Inquisition. Tomorrow, we celebrate Juneteenth, our country’s second Independence Day.Juneteenth recognizes the official ending of the enslavement of people of African descent in the United States. Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday in 2021, providing a deeper understanding of the evolution of our nation and its people.Juneteenth celebrations recognize the ongoing fight for human rights and equality and are often commemorated through family cookouts, faith services, musical performances, and storytelling. Today, Juneteenth celebrates African American resilience and achievement and the preservation of those historical narratives that promoted racial and personal advancement since Freedom Day. (https://lnkd.in/eCr8yj6H)Please enjoy your day as you reflect and rededicate yourself to freedom. ~ Chief Justice David K. Thomson

Today, Court and county leaders announced a new court-based initiative that will help guide people with severe mental illness to appropriate treatment and away from the criminal justice system when theyare arrestedfor misdemeanor offenses in Doña Ana County. “The goal is to empower people to lead safer and more productive lives by connecting them to behavioral health treatment and community services for food, housing and other needs,” said Supreme Court Justice Briana H. Zamora. “Doing this promotes public safety by reducing rearrests and will lessen the strain on emergency rooms, courts and law enforcement who otherwise may repeatedly interact with the same individuals struggling with mental illnesses.” Justice Zamora serves as the Court’s liaison to the Commission on Mental Health and Competency, which envisioned the competency diversion pilot project. The Supreme Court established the commission in 2022 to improve how the justice system responds to people experiencing mental health related issues.A public event is scheduled Friday at the Doña Ana County Magistrate Court to launch the misdemeanor competency diversion pilot project. Guest speakers include Justice Zamora, Doña Ana County Magistrate Judge Alex Rosario, and county leaders. Full circle experience for Lysette Romero Córdova, Chief Deputy Clerk of Court for the New Mexico Supreme Court, who came back to her beloved Mesa Vista High School to give the keynote address to nearly 67 graduating students earlier this month. Ms. Córdova told the audience that she spoke at her high school graduation and for that speech, her father suggested she incorporate words of wisdom about success: "Your knowledge and achievements are things that can neither be taken from you nor valued by anyone else except for the individual who engages tirelessly in their efforts. Remember that if the success and happiness we seek is not on our own terms—if it looks good to the world—but doesn’t feel right in our hearts, then it is not success at all."She said the advice she shared in 2004 was profound, but she didn't know what it meant. Understanding the meaning of those words now, here are a few of her words of wisdom: Know that there is no single definition of success.Understand that failure is not the opposite of success, but a crucial part of the journey to success in any endeavor. Whatever path you choose, it won't be easy. Your parents are right, nothing will be handed to you. Mesa Vista has provided you with the foundation you need to succeed. Be proud of your Northern New Mexico accent. "Remember that our roots are our compass," Lysette Romero Córdova said. "They will guide you through life with grace and humility. Carry with you the spirit of our community, the warmth of our traditions, and dare to carve out a life that reflects your definition of success."Congratulations to Mesa Vista High School Class of 2024 and to Chief Deputy Clerk of Court for the New Mexico Supreme Court Lysette Romero Cordóva! #nmcourts #NewMexico #Classof2024
